MISSION STATEMENT -The Equine Angels Rescue Sanctuary was established to rescue foals, mares, geldings and stallions and place them into loving homes. We rescue the equines from slaughter and qualify potential adopters and foster homes. We do site inspections and monitor progress of new “families” with follow-up visits and/or veterinarian reports. We believe that we are responsible to both parties for the success of the new relationship.
Dear Friends In Rescue,
February 3, 2014

Equine Angels Rescue Sanctuary, EARS, is helping former Premarin farmers get out of horses without sending either mares or foals to slaughter. This plan is working because it is being supervised and because we have recently been successful in getting other farmers out of the breeding business. Briefly, our action plan results in rescuing foals, placing mares in sanctuary, gelding two year old stallions and helping to end the cycle of breeding for each farmer. The background in which all this takes place is in Manitoba, Canada. We had worked for almost 9 years with these and other local farmers and that was when we first saw the wisdom and win-win-win-win opportunities that would result if we allied with the farmers.

The genesis of that outreach is well documented in our book "Equine Angels: Stories of Rescue, Love and Hope". The reason that this good faith alliance works is that we have spent time with the farmers and their families. We understand the social and financial dynamics that are a huge part of their decision making process. You may remember that originally, I got involved with rescue because I was doing a documentary film about the rescuers. That objective, inquiring approach has served us well in ferreting out the people who will live up to their word and recognizing those who won't be honest and cooperative. It has helped us to establish a verifiable protocol to put the mares in sanctuary. We have trusted people already in place who really care for the mares and report their condition to us. They know that other people are also reporting to us and that we will know the legitimacy of their observations, if the other reports ever deviate from theirs. All reporters are unaware of the identity of our other agents. We developed those relationships by spending time in small towns and learning who is who. We know the vets, the farm agents, the farmers and their families. The government takes meticulous statistics and I trust most of their numbers which have followed the decline of Premarin farming.

Meanwhile, the last retiring farmers and their families are aware of the success we have had with their neighbors in creating a viable sanctuary program for their mares and geldings. $75 per month per horse covers the hay, 2 vet visits, 2 farrier visits and vigilance throughout the year. These Canadian farmers are dedicated to their horses and prefer this outcome for the mares. It makes better sense than reclimatizing the mares by bringing them to the US only to observe that they are not the best adoption candidates. Eight, two year old stallions have been gelded by EARS. Those two year olds will be ready for transport this spring, but right now, our focus is on getting all 18 of the 2-4 year olds through a winter that has seen -45 degree temperatures. Then we can start an adoption campaign for them. We also team up to present rescues at Equine Affaire in Springfield, Mass (November 2008-2013) with Ray Of Light Farm and hope to do the same again this year.

The farmers in Manitoba, Canada have agreed to leave the Premarin farming business and the breeding business too. Financial implications are part of that decision and as working farmers, they have other sources of income. That range of other choices seems to make a big difference in that the farmers who have those other choices are less likely to pursue breeding for meat as a revenue source. As a rescue, we have often encountered that mindset and absolutely cannot enable farmers to breed by buying their foals. That would be a step backwards to say the least. Please help us save these older horses in sanctuary in Canada. We Are VIGILANT!!

Our goal is to remove the mares especially from the breeding cycle and put them in sanctuary at the town pasture. A common pasture where the whole town can observe them and our agents can report to us on their care and condition. That is 12 months x $75 equals $900 per horse times 18 mares and geldings equals $16,200.. Their transport to North Dakota, including border fees would be approximately $2,000 and fuel, oil, tolls, and food for the pick up to CT would be approximately $1500. The total then, for this years project, would be $19,700. You may see their pictures HERE.

We have the ability to raise some money with the new 4 disk DVD set "Success-Foals in Training", we have produced with Anna Twinney. We are looking for connections, alliances and ideas to market the DVD's to the benefit of the horses. 1 copy is $99,...but if you buy 4 copies or more, each copy is $69 That is less than 18 cents a minute!! To see a TRAILER go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5KPxdL-WFc or search "you tube" to find "-reach out to horses-Success-Foals In Training". I can only add that we have been a 501(c)3 for over 10 years and have successfully saved and placed over 355 foals, mares and geldings into loving and forever homes that we continue to monitor at the present time. How more valuable is an idea from his head, intellect and artwork as well, all in this wonderful letter which could easily become a song--inspired by the words of John Lennon!! Please help us save horses, the latest rescue of 15-5 month old babies has just arrived over the border from Canada--SAVED from slaughter. Thank You, the voluntEARS of EARS

Auction LetterIn celebration of John Lennon's birthday, October 9th, a letter written by John Lennon has been anonymously donated to Equine Angels Rescue Sanctuary (EARS) to help save baby horses from slaughter. The letter containing self portrait drawings by John and Yoko and written over 40 years ago, will be auctioned off to raise funds to save doomed equines. "The fact that John Lennon can still save these noble horses and change our hearts with the words in this letter, even now, from the far beyond, is amazing to me," said Frank Weller, president of EARS. "We realize that the horses that we rescue go on to save many people along their rescue journey. They uplift their new families and many have given challenged children a new life as they become the center of equine therapy programs treating kids at risk," Weller said. Equine Angels Rescue Sanctuary is a 501(c)3, non-profit horse rescue. EARS rescues foals, mares and stallions from service in the Premarin industry. The foals are matched with families who provide forever, loving homes. They are monitored after adoption and during the last 10 years over 320 foals have been rescued. The mares and stallions (who get gelded) are put into sanctuary after being rescued.

NEWS!

About Our Book,

It has been our dream to show exactly how valuable the PMU horses are and so we have worked on this book for almost two years. Now you can buy our new book, which is published by Lyons Press, directly from us and you will also help raise awareness about these endangered horses. All of our proceeds from each book sale go to EARS' rescue and adoption mission. The book, with spectacular photography of foals, mares and rescuers, would make a wonderful gift and save horses too! The book is signed by me and the horses and the price includes shipping. You can also get an unsigned copy from www.amazon.com for about 40% off and they give free shipping if you buy two.

The photographs (130 of them) and stories feature ruggedly beautiful horses in their natural splendor that transform from once-wild creatures into loving and intelligent companions, bonding with their human families. Included are stories of successes great and small: foals growing up to be national competitors, therapy helpers, and members of families that are healed by the love of a devoted horse.

Uplifting, and with gorgeous photography, "Equine Angels: Stories of Rescue, Love, and Hope" will inspire, delight, and teach life lessons through the wisdom received when connecting with these noble equine souls. "Equine Angels" illustrates how people and horses are deeply touched along the rescue path. Enjoy the rescue journey and see how "Rescues, Rescue Us"!

Thanks for visiting and for your interest in helping us to save mares and foals from slaughter. We hope that you enjoy their photos.
